Book Review. Yeah!

It may be hard to believe that I actually read since most of my thoughts seem thoughtless and based on anything, but logic. Recently I finished a novel titled Ishmael, which focuses around the perspective of a chimp who shares a name with the book. The book is improbable because in it the chimp talks and is incredibly opinionated. (don't you just hate people or chimps like that) At any rate the monkey believes that the agricultural revolution was the worst thing for the world. He claims that he doesn't hate agriculture, but he does.

This monkey actually thinks farming and raisiing animals is the work of satan. If the revolution had never occurred writing never would have developed and his book wouldn't even had been published. Basically Ishmael owes his very existence to the agricultural revolution. This is not to say "to hell with the Earth," we still need to be stewards of the planet, but that does not mean giving up our very way of life. Lastly I would like to point out contrary to Ishmael's belief that the human population will grow without limit is a complete fallacy. In the developed world, many countries are going through a fourth stage of development in which population shrinks. Japan expects to lose about 37 million people by 2055 and Germany's population should drop by about 25 million by 2050. Once other countries experience the industrial revolution their populations should shrink too, which will limit the world's population to something sustainable.

Infrastructure: Not just for the West anymore

After reading another article in a communist rag better known as the New York Times, I have learned about the apparent plight of Africa. I am sure you are as shocked as I am about the current state of Africa last I knew the Egyptian's were busy enslaving the Israelites, but apparently things of changed.

Egyptian's whipping their Israelite slaves.

More seriously though, it is time that the west stop with these half-assed efforts to save the "Dark Continent." Either stop either the food aid and clothing or actually help alleviate the conditions that cause Africa's problems. I am not even thinking about AIDS in this because if you improve the other conditions the AIDS problem will also improve.

Consider the United States and Western Europe: do they have people with AIDS? Yes. Do they have an AIDS epidemic? No, the reason they have the infrastructure to deal with the problem. The U.S. and Europe have the ability to provide their citizen's with medication and massive education campaigns to tell people about AIDS.

The biggest difference between the the West and Africa is infrastructure. So how does one acquire this "infrastruture?" The answer is stability within the government, education, and enough food and shelter for a nation's citizens. Just look at South Korea's rise to prominence they had an authoritarian regime until the 1980s, but this system provided them with the stability required to develop and now they are a Democracy and an economic power. The same thing is now happening in China and could happen in Africa.

If the West wants to truly help Africa they need to help African's help themselves by providing civil servants than can help run their nations until they have enought time to develop their own educated class to be teachers, doctors, and burearacts on wide scale. With these comes industry, a stable food supply, and most importantly wealth, will allow Africa to overcome AIDS and its violent past.

Event Etiquette: A lost Art

Now that the graduation season is over it's time to critique the sorry state our society has fallen into. Concerts, plays and any other type of public gathering that requires any sort of manners, formality or etiquette have become sporting events. We have all attended a movie with some jackass who will not turn off their cellphone or in my case had several people yell into the theater at the climax of a thriller. It wouldn't be as bad if movies were the only events experiencing this rude, asshole behavior. High school and college graduations have become sporting events complete with morons yelling and air horns to create even more unrequired noise.

To solve this problem seats at theaters, auditoriums, and amphitheaters should be equipped with decibel meters to track the sound emanating from the seat. If someone violates the maximum volume rule, they should be debarked on the spot because its not hard to keep your goddamn mouth shut. If you must ruin the experience for others you better have a good reason because you are about to lose your ability to make anymore sound.

Just Put The Damn Wall Back Up

Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the United States has had generally uninhibited, global dominance, which has proven to be a very bad thing for everyone. Luckily, the world has a savior in its midst. (no Jesus has not returned yet) This man rules with iron fist that Stalin would have approved of and at the same time is loved by his people, which is more than Stalin could take credit for during his reign. (if you include all the people he killed)

The man I am referring to is, of course, Vladimir Putin. Mr. Putin is an ex-KGB agent and the current "President" of Russia. In the past year, Russia has become as about un-democratic as is possible without actually being a dictatorship. Last October, Anna Politkovskaya was shot in the head while waiting for an elevator in her apartment building. Anna Politkovskaya was a well-known Russian journalist and human rights activist who was quite open with her opposition to the war in Chechyna. A little to open I guess.

Next came Alexander Litvinenko who was first a member of the KGB and then became a British citizen because of a few not so nice things he accused Putin and other members of the Russian government of doing. He was posioned.

Then this March, Paul M. Joyal, a critic of the KGB, was shot in outside of Washington, D.C. He is currently recovering from the gunshot wounds. So how free is the "free" press in democratic Russia?

But to give it more of a Cold War feel, Mr. Putin has responded to American attempts to deploy missiles to eastern Europe designed to combat the threat of a nuclear Iran. With a threat to deploy more missiles pointed at western Europe in Russia.
"Mr. Putin put up that wall"
I get the picture lets just put the wall back up and call it a day. It would probably be better for everyone the United States and Russian journalist included.

What is wrong with Major League Baseball?

In an open letter to Major League Baseball, NAACP chief Dennis Hayes criticized the league for not doing enough to encourage African-Americans to play pro-baseball. Today, African-Americans only make up 8.4% of all pro-baseball players. Hayes followed up his remarks on how little baseball has done to help African Americans succeed in baseball by writing the following:

"(He) watched with amazement at how funding for baseball programs has found its way to the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and other countries."

Before I get to my main point I would like to show pictures of all these Latin players that are taking the spots of Blacks in pro-baseball.

Obviously the Latin menace needs to be checked, so that African-Americans can have a chance to succeed in pro-sports. What baseball needs to do is steal athletes from the NBA and NFL where Blacks 77% and 65% respectively. Maybe they should take Advertisement spots during Basketball and Football games with catchy phrases like Baseball not just for Latins anymore.

While the NAACP addresses the great problem Major League Baseball's lack of diversity, which is obviously the most pressing issue for African-Americans as an ethnic group. Whites on the other hand need to address the the fact that US born whites only make up 11.55% of NBA players. Naturally, correcting race inbalance in pro-sports in the most pressing social issue of our time education, health care, and everything else, for that matter, will just have to wait.
